The Gammon Cam

Our own John Gammon has provided this photo of a bull moose strolling by his cabin this past weekend.  Moose are often seen in the Big Horns along Hwy 16 above Buffalo or Hwy 14 above Sheridan, WY.  We look forward to seeing more from the ‘Gammon Cam’!

Beautiful Spring

May has been a rainy month in Wyoming!  It’s not often we get to say that, but we sure enjoy it when we can.  A late snow mid-May made for a stunning scene with snow on the dark, timbered mountains contrasting with the bright blue sky and early spring grass.BigHorns1

Coming Home

Coming Home! TenSleep-20mar-202010-20004_sm

After a long – but good – day of showing properties to prospective buyers, its always good to see the beautiful Big Horn Mountains.  They were called the “Shining Mountains” by the Native Americans for the bright snow-capped peaks along the 70 mile mountain range.  This photo was taken after leaving Worland and I’m on my way to Ten Sleep and on up over the mountain.  While I’m up there, I always keep an eye open for a herd of elk or a moose or two in the willows.

FYI – The Big Horn National Forest extends over much of the Big Horn Mountain Range.  The mountain offers a great diversity of uses.  Wintertime recreational pursuits include snowmobiling, snow-shoeing, cross country skiing, downhill skiing and even sledding.  Warmer weather opens the country up to fishermen, wildflower and birding enthusiasts, ATV & ORV-riders, hikers & backpackers, trail riders, and campers. Special attractions in the Big Horns include historical and archaeological sites such as Medicine Wheel National Historical Site, guest ranches, and the communities located at the foothills.  And lastly, autumn brings the much anticipated elk, deer, and antelope hunting season in the forest and on private, federal, and state lands throughout Wyoming.

WYO Miles – Esterbrook

Esterbrook-20Range2_smYesterday I had the good fortune to travel through the Esterbrook area south of Douglas, WY.  I love the Laramie Range and need to spend a lot more time in those mountains.  The country suits me and I’m quite sure it does many others.

I’d describe Esterbrook as a summer recreational hidey-hole.  There are private homes/cabins tucked away in the forest below the massive Laramie Peak.  The Medicine Bow National Forest is close, and the area looks to be a sweet spot for wildlife.  If you’ve got access to a fishing stream it’s got to be great, too.

Large ranch operations have preserved much of the country in open space.  I’d love to spend a day gathering cattle there one day.  The views are amazing.

Wyoming Elk Hunt Area 7 – Ranches

area7elk“Area 7” is known as a trophy elk hunt area in Wyoming.  Centered around Laramie Peak, this eastern-WY mountain range is great area in which to own a private, big-game hunting ranch.  We’ve got several ranches listed within the area… See the semi-remote/rugged JCA Mountain Ranch and the MacNichol Ranch.   For easy access to elk and for property ownership in the area, the Welborn Farm draws a surprising number of elk to the lush alfalfa fields.

If you’re new to hunting in Wyoming, check out the Game and Fish’s Hunting Guide, the 2010 Elk Hunt Area Map, and the Wyoming Game and Fish for all of the official hunt regs.

Contact me for information on other elk hunting properties in the area.

Moisture in Wyoming

It’s raining in Wyoming… well, we’ve a few snow flurries right at the moment.  But it’s moisture and we’ve had a good bunch of it the last week.  The forecast is for this wet weather to continue throughout the coming week.  You can check our local precipitation levels, or even volunteer to be a precipitation reporter with the CoCoRaHS network:  http://www.cocorahs.org/Maps/ViewMap.aspx?state=WY.
