THE LOCATION

The Aspen Springs Ranch is located in northeastern Wyoming in Wyoming's Black Hills.  The property is midway between public lands of the Black Hills National Forest to the north of Sundance and east in South Dakota, and the Thunder Basin National Grasslands to the west/southwest. Inyan Kara Mountain, a significant Plains Indian landmark, is approximately two miles to the northwest. The property is located only 18 miles south of Sundance in Weston County.  Traveling only 80 miles brings one to Rapid City, SD... an ideal distance for a weekend get-away.

 ABOUT THE RANCH

Aspen Springs Ranch includes 640± acres of scenic timbered mountain land in the spectacular Black Hills of Wyoming and a beautiful, classic log home nestled in a private setting among a grove of aspen trees.   The entire property is easily accessible and fronts a county road.  The topography from the ~6,000 foot elevation offers awesome views.  Look to the south from “Sunset Ridge” & “Garrett’s Point” to see the beautiful red butte of the high desert surrounded by isolated meadows.  On a clear day, the Bighorn Mountain Range, some 100 miles away, can be seen.  Looking to the north, the Bearlodge Mountains are visible some 30 miles away.  

Opportunities for year-around use are excellent and snowmobiling is a favorite winter activity at Aspen Springs Ranch.  Immediately inside the gated entrance, a recently constructed shed houses snowmobiles or ATVs.  A sledding hill near the cabin and trout pond offers fun for the entire family.

Acreage:  The ranch is 640± deeded acres and is surrounded by other private lands.

Ranch Production:  The northern half of the ranch includes approximately 30 acres of dryland, mixed grass/alfalfa hay fields.  A windmill and water tank and three undeveloped springs provide water for both wildlife and livestock.  The ranch is currently leased to a neighboring rancher who maintains the hay fields and grazes cattle a few months each year.  The ranch would provide a nice setting for several horses as well.

WILDLIFE AND NATURAL RESOURCES

The property offers a wonderful diversity of cover types, beneficial food resources, and water to support elk, mule deer, white tail deer, and turkey.  The southern side of the property is primarily ponderosa pine-covered hillsides. Careful thinning of the forest has benefited the property by creating age and cover diversity in the pine stands and allowing sun to reach the forest floor.  The understory shrubs, forbs, & grasses are thriving under this management. The northern side of the property offers a well balanced mix of pine, aspen, and open meadows.  The aspen stands are healthy and regenerating offering browse for elk and deer and buds for turkeys and grouse. 

THE HOME

The log home was completely refurbished in 2001 by Jorgenson Log Builders, well-known log home builders in the Black Hills region.  The home is 2,600± sq ft of living space and has a light and airy design.  The home has 2 bedrooms and 2 baths on the main floor and a large, fully-finished loft above.  The fireplace is constructed of native "moss rock" and can be enjoyed from the open living area and fully-equipped galley kitchen. A large deck and portico is the focal point of many peaceful evenings.

Though it has the feel of being tucked away in the woods, the home has modern communications and entertainment features including satellite television, a Telular phone system ("Cellular Fixed Wireless" technology) and a remote security and environmental monitoring system.
