THE LOCATION

Bighorn River Hideaway is located six miles south of Hardin, Montana,  adjacent to the west bank of the nationally acclaimed Bighorn River.  The elevation of the property is approximately 2,920 feet above sea level.  According to NOAA and The Weather Channel, the average annual precipitation is 12.07 inches per year, the average high temperature is 63.17º F, and the average low temperature is 33.27º F.

Hardin (population 3,505±) sits next to Interstate 90 in southeast Montana, and is the county seat of Big Horn County.  The city was named for Samuel Hardin, a friend of developer Charles Henry Morrill.

Coal mining and agriculture are the major industries of the region.  Area farms and ranches raise cattle, alfalfa hay, sugar beets, and small grains.  Tourists travel to the county to visit Yellowtail Dam, Old Fort C. F. Smith, Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument, Custer Battlefield Museum, and other Native American cultural sites.  Sportsmen flock to the area to fish, boat, and hunt waterfowl & upland birds on the famous Bighorn River.

Bighorn River Hideaway is located just 36 miles downstream from Yellowtail Dam.  The first 13 miles of the Bighorn River below Yellowtail Dam is considered one of the premier fly fishing streams in the United States, and attracts anglers from all over the world.  Trophy rainbow and brown trout inhabit this upper portion of the river.  However, many fishing guides will tell you that they prefer to fish the lower portion of the river (from the Bighorn Access Site to the town of Hardin) because of the decreased fishing pressure and the large rainbow and nocturnal brown trout which inhabit the undercut banks.  The Two Leggings River Access point lies just 2 miles upstream from the property, and there is a private boat access site on the subject property.  The property owners and their guests regularly catch large rainbow and brown trout from the river bank next to their home.  This section of river also provides fishing opportunities for catfish, whitefish, and bass.  Due to the way river flows are regulated at the Yellowtail Dam, the Bighorn River seldom freezes during the winter; thus providing one of the few wintertime fly/streamer trout fishing opportunities in the northern tier of the U.S.

HUNTING AND FISHING OPPORTUNITIES

The magnificent Bighorn River flows along the eastern border of this scenic property luring fishermen to a world-class trout fishing experience. The Bighorn River is considered one of the finest trout streams in the lower forty-eight states, where15 inch Brown trout and 16 inch Rainbow trout are common catches.  The Bighorn is a high-quality fly fishing river offering anglers the opportunity to catch large fish year around.

Fall brings hunting seasons for waterfowl, upland birds, and turkeys.  Big Horn River Hideaway is situated in a spectacular location for hunting ducks, geese, pheasants, and turkeys.  As other waterways in southern Montana begin to freeze over in late fall and early winter, the Bighorn River in the area between Fort Smith and Hardin remains open due to fast flows and deep channels.  Each year migrating waterfowl stop in the Bighorn and Yellowstone river valleys to feed on waste grain from nearby harvested croplands. Pheasants and turkeys seek the shelter and seclusion of the many islands scattered along the length of the Bighorn River. The Bighorn River Hideaway has numerous locations for waterfowl hunting blinds along its 1/3 mile of private river frontage.  The river islands can be accessed for pheasant and turkey hunting by raft, drift boat, or jet ski.
