THE LOCATION

The Merry Hawk Ranch is located in northeastern Wyoming south of Hulett and only minutes from Devil’s Tower National Monument on Tower Road.   This scenic property offers views of nearby Devil’s Tower, a one-of-a-kind natural wonder.  Rising 1,267 feet above the Belle Fourche River and surrounding area, Devils Tower makes a dramatic statement on the horizon.  Declared the first United States National Monument in 1906 by President Theodore Roosevelt, this awesome phenomenon of nature is also known as Bear's Lodge and is a sacred site for many Native Americans. The ranch also lies near the western boundary of the Black Hills National Forest and the Bear Lodge Mountains.

ABOUT THE RANCH

The property offers a beautiful location with great flexibility to be used as a hunting property or to develop a homesite or small family farm. The Merry Hawk Ranch features tree covered hilltops & wooded draws characteristic of the Black Hills region.  The mixed stands of bur oak, ponderosa pines, and chokecherry provide excellent habitat for whitetail deer and Merriam turkey.   The large open meadows produced grain crops throughout the years. Dryland alfalfa/grass hay is harvested from the acreage each year.   A neighboring rancher leases the ranch for a short grazing period each year.

Acreage: The ranch is 621± deeded acres in a single contiguous block.

Irrigation & Hay Production: There is no irrigation on  the Merry Hawk Ranch.  Dryland hay is harvested on meadows throughout the property. The surrounding area also produces small grain crops.

Livestock Operations: The ranch is leased to a neighboring rancher for a short grazing period each year.  The property is ideal for small-scale livestock production.  LIvestock water is provided by a well and small reservoir located central to the property.

THE CABIN

The only improvements on the ranch are two small cabins currently used by hunters in the fall.  The well is located near the cabin and power is available across the northern part of the property to the cabin.  While the cabins are decades old, they are functional and clean.

WILDLIFE AND NATURAL RESOURCES

The combination of shelter provided by the draws and timber and the variety of food sources provided by open meadows & brushy species create a habitat mosaic for deer, turkey, and the few elk that pass through the ranch.  The Merry Hawk Ranch is located in deer Hunt Area 2, a general license area.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

The real estate taxes for 2009 were approximately $340 according to the Crook County Assessor.   The elevation of the ranch varies from approximately 4,200’ to 4,475’.  There is power through the northern part of the property and a well located near the cabin.
