This photo was taken on the Antelope Rim Ranch located near Thermopolis, WY. Early spring irrigation helps to ensure ample feed throughout the summer. Snowcap peaks of the Shoshone National Forest lie behind the Owl Creek Mountains in the distance.

Whether on your own property or on the hundreds of thousands of acres of public lands, the best way to see the country is horseback.

Branding is an annual event that brings together family, friends and neighbors. The traditional ‘rope and drag’ method is still used today on this southwestern Montana ranch. Other ranching operations brand and vaccinate using a ‘calf table’. The goal of either method is to complete the task quickly and efficiently. Afterwards, everyone gathers for a large meal and a good visit.

This herd of trophy bull elk was photographed by one of our friends just above the Clay Ranch. These elk migrate up and down the canyons from the Clay Ranch to the slopes above. Landowner tags on the Clay Ranch make it possible to join in the hunt for one of these trophies every year. Note the two deer looking at the camera in front of the elk.

Shipping day may be the most important day of the year for ranchers across Wyoming and Montana. The year’s group of calves or yearlings has been sold either ‘on the video’ or in an auction ring and the last step is to load the calves on the trucks and deliver them to the buyers. In this photo a family from Johnson County is sorting steers from heifers before they are loaded on the trucks.

This large herd of elk was photographed above the Clay Ranch. The elk migrate from the upper timber, across the open slopes, and down to the rugged canyons for water, feed and shelter. Hunting and viewing opportunities are plentiful.

Our own Bill Welles savors the moment on the Wind River in the Wind River Canyon just south of Thermopolis in Hot Springs County. After a day’s fishing, the hot springs pools of Thermopolis are just a few miles away. Photo by a friend of BW
